• Overview

Steinberg Architects, founded in 1953, is a third-generation architectural firm that brings a thoughtful, innovative approach to design. With over 130 employees and offices in San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles we are a dynamic team of individuals with the experience and talent to understand, collaborate with and challenge our clients in order to achieve results beyond typical expectations.

Our process-driven approach encourages clients to architecturally explore their organization, their desires and ultimately their vision. While we pose tough questions, we provide sufficient space and time for awareness, and we listen carefully to help clients identify core values that can become significant drivers in the design. By project's end, our collaboration results in buildings that not only meet objectives, but also demonstrate how design can benefit an organization, its employees and the community in ways not previously considered.

Steinberg Architects is committed to identifying ways to incorporate green or sustainable design factors into the design of each building. A large portion of our staff is LEED® accredited through the U.S. Green Building Council. We have been awarded a LEED-CI Silver rating (Commercial Interiors) for our Los Angeles office and we are currently in the process of seeking LEED®-EB Silver Certification for our San Jose and San Francisco offices.

  • History

Founded in 1953 by Goodwin ("Goody") Steinberg, The Steinberg Group, as it was then known, played an important role in the transformation of the agriculturally-centered Santa Clara Valley into the technology crossroads now referred to as the Silicon Valley. The son of a prominent Chicago architect, Goody studied with Mies van der Rohe and began his architectural career with a move from the Midwest to the Bay Area.

With an initial focus on custom residential design for valley leaders, Goody became known for his planning abilities, environmental interests, sensitivity to scale and spatial flow, and harmonies created with light and landscape. By the 1970's the firm's portfolio expanded beyond residential design into community and civic work. In 1977 Rob Steinberg joined the firm directly after graduating from UC Berkeley and in 1994 took over the role of President.

Through his vision Steinberg Architects has grown from 13 employees to over 130 with three offices and renewed focus on award-winning design and cutting edge sustainable initiatives. Under the direction of an eight-principal management group, Steinberg Architects continues to draw from Goody's original values and the community reputation it inherited.
