Park Townsend

This condominium complex is a premier example of urban integration and revitalization that inspires a vibrant street environment and lively pedestrian activity. The 5 story structure, which is part of the San Jose Redevelopment Agency’s downtown revitalization project, tops a 196-stall parking garage and includes a landscaped courtyard, gym, and swimming pool. Incorporating high-density housing into this historical setting required balancing the desires of the client and City for a complex that attracts an urban demographic with the needs of a sensitive older neighborhood.

Custom designed façades and building materials allow the complex to achieve harmony with the surrounding architecture. The building holds urban street elevations while being conscious of acoustics and solar orientation. Solariums, recessed balconies, and numerous arbors mitigate solar heat gain while terraces and landscaped open spaces provide transitions and contextual balance. The resulting design embodies the rich historical style of the surrounding neighborhood, earning the approval of the Historic Landmark Commission.
