Santa Monica College, Student Services Center
The new Student Services Center not only consolidates all of Santa Monica College’s major Student Services departments into one location in order to improve access to services and provide an efficiency of common shared spaces. It is also a contemporary architectural statement that resonates with echoes of the campus’s physical setting, evoking images of running water, the nearby cliffs, ocean, and beach. The new facility will also be energy-efficient, easy to maintain and service, and LEED® certified at the Gold level. The streetscape adjacent to the new Student Services Center and existing Drescher Hall along Pico Boulevard will be transformed into a new campus edge.
A grand campus entry plaza and landscaped area will bring the students out into the neighborhood and provide a “window” into the campus for the community. The Center is located over a 500-space subterranean parking garage and site improvements include a new auto drop-off point and public transit stop. The College bookstore will be relocated to the ground floor of the newly renovated and expanded Drescher Hall, complementing the adjacent Student Services Building and reinforcing the new campus gateway. Exterior building treatments and enhanced landscaping are also planned to update the existing building’s appearance and reinforce the identity of Santa Monica College to the public.
